A rooftop tent is usually the biggest single camping purchase in a build, and prices run from a few hundred dollars to well over $5,000. This guide sticks to tents currently listed under $2,000 in the TrailReady catalog, split into two price bands. It's a comparison of published specs and current prices, not a hands-on review.
Hardshell or softshell?
Hardshell tents (clamshell, wedge or pop-up) open in about a minute, pack flatter and handle wind better, but they cost more and often weigh more for the same floor space. Softshell fold-out tents give you more sleeping area for the money and usually have room for an annex underneath, but take longer to set up and pack away. Under $2,000 you'll find plenty of softshells and a growing number of hardshells.
What to check before you buy
Weight vs. your rack's dynamic load rating. The tent's weight has to be at or under the dynamic rating of both your rack and your vehicle roof. See the roof rack guide.
Mattress thickness and sleeping size. Brands list these differently, so compare in inches.
Closed height if you park in a garage.
Fabric and rain fly for desert sun and monsoon storms.
